Cold Weather, Birthdays and Birds

Last week I wrote about how so many of us were headed into the deep freeze with all this cold weather.  Well, I guess we got there because temperatures have continued to go down in many parts of the U.S. and many other countries as well.  It is currently 0 degrees F here and was below 0 last night.  I’m not complaining though because I have friends in Minnesota and Canada that have temps of -40!

We braved the cold last night to celebrate my granddaughter’s 25th birthday.  Originally, we were going to do that last weekend but heavy snow postponed the celebration a week.  We met at a popular Indian Restaurant for dinner and then went to my son’s house for a bit.  It was wonderful to see family as that is a very rare occurrence these days.  We will be fortunate to see everyone again next week as we will be celebrating my grandson’s 19th birthday.  Gavin and Annika have birthdays that are less than two weeks apart making February a big birthday month for our family!

I always feed the birds here but in this extremely cold weather I try to have a little extra for them.  We get a nice variety of birds year-round so today I thought I would try to get a few pictures.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s Day today!  Tom gave me some chocolate covered strawberries and a beautiful red rose!  Have a good week everyone!

  3. Happy Valentine's day! So lucky to see family, too.
The same birds, with the addition of starlings, abd the occasional goldfinch, are showing up at my feeder. I put out extra suet before our big storm, and they came from all around after the wind dropped.

    1. Thank you Boud! The birds really love that suet in this cold weather. I love watching the birds year-round but especially in the winter. Happy Valentine's Day to you!

  4. Your Valentine's gifts are pretty! We don't celebrate it, but at the end of the month our 5th anniversary of being together is coming up...
How nice to meet with family! We are not allowed to meet more than one person who is not from our own household. In O.K. and my case this means we can not visit my parents together, and the same goes for my sister and I - it would be three households, with my sister and I each living on our own.
At least the 8:00 pm curfew has been lifted now, which means I can invite my sister over for dinner without having to start so early and keep checking the time - that does not make for the most relaxed of atmospheres!

    1. How exciting that you and O.K. have a five year anniversary soon! I hope your restrictions will be lifted soon so your family can all get together. We have restrictions preventing large public groups from gathering. I'm glad to hear the curfew has been lifted so you don't have to watch the clock all the time! Have a good week Meike!

    1. You really have the cold weather there! We are supposed to get to 15 below today or tomorrow but after that we are hoping it will warm up a little. I hope you are well and enjoying all your beautiful art!

  6. The chocolate strawberries look delicious.

The unusual snowfall here is now being washed away by rain - much more common for the East of England!

    1. You had a beautiful snow but I imagine it will be wet and muddy for a while now. Hopefully now it will be a little easier for you to get out if you need to. Have a good week Sue!

  7. We seem to be feeding a huge and varied bird population, too. We buy 50lb bags of good seed and suet by the case. If you feed them, they will come...a variation of the line from the Field of Dreams movie. In this case, very true. The heated birdbath is popular, too. Must say, they do provide some entertainment. Watching the birds come in for a landing on our ice covered deck yesterday was like watching touch and go landings at an airport in bad weather. Slip. Slide a foot. Off again!

    1. I love watching the birds! I bet they really appreciate the heated birdbath too. We have a feeder hanging off our deck so the birds get fed and our indoor cats get entertained all at once. I bet that was something watching them on the icy surface. Have a good week Mary!

  8. Happy Birthday to Annika! I know you enjoyed seeing family. We sure don't see ours very much these days.

You sure got some nice pics of the birds...if we did not have so many starlings we would be seeing these, but we don't get many besides them. They just flock in and eat everything in short order.

    1. It's always good to see family and these days we only do on special occasions, but I'm thankful for those times.

I love the birds and I wish I could take the quality pictures that you take. We do get a good variety of birds.

    1. Hi Jackie! I love the birds and these cold temperatures are really hard on them. I hope you and your family are staying warm and healthy in all this extreme cold!

  11. I love your birds! Unfortunately I don't get as many at the new house as I did at the old... I'm not sure why. I put up a feeder months ago, and it's still half full. At my old house, I would have gone through several bags of seed by now. I know they're around because I can hear them. Maybe they just have more to eat here.

Those chocolate covered strawberries look delicious!

    1. We have a row of trees at the back of our yard and they are usually full of many birds and squirrels. That's too bad you haven't had as many birds at the feeder at your new house. Have you tried different kinds of bird seed? The number of birds we have at the feeder varies but in this below 0 weather we get them all. I hope you and your family are well!

  12. Nicely done, Tom. I love the pictures of the cardinals, Bonnie. I would always love seeing them when I visited family in the St. Louis area.

  13. This cold will go away soon (I hope), but meanwhile, we have these lovely birds to see and enjoy. As I lament all the snow we have had this month, I have to admit that the scenes out my window with many bright Cardinals in the trees is a real joy to see.

    1. I agree with you, it is wonderful to watch these beautiful birds! We are still having heavy snow and sub 0 temperatures but that is all the more reason to feed these sweet birds!

  14. Happy belated birthday to your grandchildren. The strawberries and red rose from your husband were so thoughtful. Thank you for sharing such pretty bird photos. Here in Georgia, we have had a few days recently in the mid 70s. Flowers and shrubs are beginning to bud.
