Cats in Windows

Sophie & Zeus
Our cats, Sophie and Zeus love to spend time looking out the windows and doors.  They each look out for different favorite things.  If they are in another part of the house and we call out "squirrels" they will each come running.  Of course they both love watching the birds and squirrels but Sophie in particular considers that her personal job.  Each morning, bright and early, she assumes her position at the back door.  She is usually perched on top of their cat tower watching out for birds and squirrels.  She takes her work seriously and will only leave a couple of times during the day until 5:00 PM when she considers herself off work and goes to another room for a nap.

Zeus
Zeus, on the other hand, prefers to watch trucks out the front window.  There is nothing he loves more than to watch the garbage truck come by each week.  He always watches intently as the men dump the garbage in the truck and drive away.  If Zeus is in a different room and we call out "Zeus, truck" he will come running to the front window.  Sophie could care less for things like trucks and will not come.

Zeus & Sophie watching the Santa Bus
There is one exception when Sophie does like to see a vehicle driving by the house.  In our small town they have a Santa Bus that drives all around each neighborhood on weekends in December.  The Santa Bus carries Santa and his Elves and stops to visit with children and give out small gifts.  Both Sophie and Zeus absolutely love the Santa Bus.  It arrives with a police escort and the sound of sleigh bells and when it stops, often in front of our house, a line of children quickly appear to see Santa.  Sophie and Zeus both love to watch this annual Christmas activity!  They even like it better than the Ice Cream Man and yes, when they hear his music they come running to the window.

  1. Oh, this is so fun to read. Cats are so funny. The two I have now don't react much to anything spoken, except Bubbie when he has stayed out all night and comes in...he talks to me and answers when I asked him questions.

But my first cat named Cougar knew a lot of words...always responded to his name, etc.

    1. I love cats and they can be so much fun. We have talked to our cats a lot since they were babies and they seem to know a lot of words.

  2. My cat is on top of all movement when he's awake, usually from the top of the cat tower. If he runs howling from window to window, I know he's made an infrequent sighting of his girlfriend next door.

    1. Cats are quite talented at being in charge of everything aren't they? So Toby is still sweet on that cute little cat next door!

    1. I'm a little partial but I think they are pretty smart. They are brother and sister and it shows just as with human children. One minute they will be picking at each other and the next cuddled up washing one another.

  4. If we had squirrels (not enough trees in this new development area) Annie would be glued, too. She watches them on the TV on her cat videos. Her favorites are the ones with chipmunks and squirrels. Your two are very interested in what goes on outside beyond the windows and have several favorites. Annie is terrified of loud noises so she runs under the bed when the snow plows and trucks or lawnmowers or weed whippers go by. She wouldn't appreciate the Santa bus because she's scared of kids, too. She's really a timid thing. I love seeing your two and hearing about them. :)

    1. Annie is a very special cat and she is brave with the partridges and rabbits! I'm not sure what our cats would do if they saw a bird that big! Our cats are scared of the vacumn cleaner and other really loud noises. Zeus cracks me up the way he loves trucks. He is just like a little boy.

  5. Our old family cat also loved the garbage truck - well, it wasn't exactly love, it was more like he kept a close eye on it, making sure it would indeed go past the house. We didn't need to call him, the truck was noisy enough to be heard as soon as it drove round the bend at the top of our long road.
How funny that Sophie is so coscentious and regular with her "job"!
I love the idea of your Santa Bus, never heard anything like it.

    1. It sounds like your cat wanted to protect the family from the garbage truck! Zeus will come running when he hears a truck but if there is one that he does not hear we call him. Yes, Sophie is very serious about her job.

  6. "Zeus, truck" - those who don't know cats never believe me when I say they often learn to recognise a small number of words. Or is it the tone of voice? One cat I knew would recognise "din dins" or eben "nid nids" said without direction or emphasis in the middle of a sentence in a normal voice.

    1. Many cats are good at learning certain words. We can't say the word "squirrel" around them unless there is one because they come running. And yes, Zeus does know truck but I don't know if Sophie knows it or not as she won't come when I say it. But she does not care about trucks like her brother.

  7. This is so interesting and shows how cats all have their different interests. We have had six cats over the years and every one was individual. Folks without cats don't always realize how unique each one is.

So funny how Sophie has a work day and a quitting time :)

    1. You are absolutely right about all cats being different. I have had quite a few cats over the years and no two had the same personality and characteristics.

  8. Do Sophie and Zeus get to wander around outside or are they always indoors? They sound like intelligent cats. Must take after their owners!

    1. They are indoor cats which is highly encouraged where we live. Our town has a strict leash law and all pets are to be on a leash or in a fenced yard when outside. We have a fenced backyard but as any cat parent knows that will not do much good with a cat. The shelter where we got them even encouraged that we not let them out. I think all cats are very intelligent in many different ways. Since we adopted these after we retired we have been able to play and work with them a lot which helps. Zeus loves to play fetch with a toy mouse. They have many toys (mostly homemade) and learn through play plus we have always talked to them and that helps their understanding of language.

  11. Hahaha "She takes her work seriously" that was the best part. This is a very interesting one to read. I never knew cats responded to words, that is something new for me! It is so cool of you to talk to them since they were babies, maybe that's how you "trained" them unknowingly. While you're being awesome, do keep sharing photographs of your cat experiences!

    1. Thank you for reading and commenting. Our cats are an important part of the family and they respond very well to us. We always talk to them and they respond back to us in their own way. They may not have a large vocabulary but they do each know certain words. More than anything, they love us and we love them.
