Rolling With the Punches

I guess that is what we are all doing these days.  There are so many changes to our way of life.  Basic, simple things have changed.  You can't even go out for a haircut.  Luckily, I had my hair cut just a couple of weeks before so many businesses were closed down.  I can go awhile without a haircut and although I may not like it, I can do it.

For many, and my husband Tom is one, it is difficult to go without a visit to his barber.  Unfortunately he was already past due for a haircut when the shops closed.  This meant that a week into it he was really wanting a haircut.  He's asked me to cut his hair in the past and I never wanted to do it.  I do not want to be responsible for messing up anyone else's hair.  But this time the situation was different.  As far as we know, it could be a long time before these types of businesses open back up.

I suppose this is one of those punches we have to roll with - right?  Tom told me not to worry about it, that if I messed it up too badly we could just shave his head.  Besides, that's a style too isn't it?  Sure.  He sat in the kitchen and I wrapped a towel around him.  That part was easy.  He gave me his electric razor with some kind of a guard on it and promised me it would cut all the hair the same length with that guard.  All I had to do was drive the razor all over his head just like when we used to have a dog and cut his hair.  But wait, I didn't cut the dog's hair.  Tom did that.  Oh boy.  I was a little nervous but I turned the razor on and made that first cut.  Nothing bad happened.  His ears were even still there.  Alright, I can do this.  In fact, it was kind of fun.  I wanted to cut stripes in his hair but he didn't like that idea.  I got it cut, and then I even trimmed around the edges and over his ears without the guard on the blade.  It didn't look half bad.  It didn't look like his barber did it, but he was happy and more comfortable.  So there is one punch in all these new punches that I learned to roll with.

We are all facing new challenges these days and I'm learning that we are capable of doing much more than we thought we could do.  Many of our challenges are much more serious than a simple haircut of course.  This new lifestyle has a learning curve for us all.  Some things are frightening, or sad, or depressing.  I believe we are all stronger than we thought and we can deal with the new challenges.  It helps to share our feelings with others, rather than holding them in until we feel like exploding.  Yea, exploding is no good.  What new challenges do you find yourself facing these days?  Do you have feelings you need to share?  I think there are a lot of us in blogland that care and are willing to listen.  I know I am.

  1. I have been shaving Roger's head since his stroke. And before that his hair was so thin that I couldn't mess it up. BUT, his beard has been a learning experience for me. I still make him shave his neck and like part of his cheeks. After almost 4 yrs I am not so terrible nervous when trimming his beard.

NOW, my hair is the problem. I need a trim and am going to have to at least attempt my bangs. My hair never looks good and I am serious. So I guess I should not worry.

Roger really misses going to eat breakfast but there is nothing I can to for that.

    1. Rose I can see where shaving Roger could be a little nerve wracking! Luckily I have not had to shave Tom yet. Now that I have mostly successfully cut his hair I won't be nervous about doing it again. I still need to practice the trimming part with the razor but I think I can do it.

I can cut my bangs and have done that since I was a teenager but I wouln't want to cut the back of my hair.

I know he must miss eating breakfast out since he loved it so much. At least with everything closed he pretty much has to understand. I guess you could still get take out once in awhile. I have not tried that yet since all this started. You two take care.

  2. Good for you for tackling something new, something that is truly daunting for many folks! Your husband is happy, you've started learning a new skill, you can even save money by doing it. I have cut my husband's hair for a few years now, but for me the challenge would be to let HIM cut MINE. He says he will just use the lawn mower to get a straight line. I think I prefer to let it grow out. lol

I find Blogland is indeed a caring place and have gotten friendship, support, caring, advice, and so much more from my bloggy friends. It's a community every bit as much as those in our lives closer to home.

    1. Congratulations that you have been cutting your husband's hair for several years! It definitely can save some money. I've been chicken about cutting his hair although I always cut my two boys hair when they were younger. But my boys wore their hair in a longer style that was popular in the 70s and I had learned to cut that with scissors. I was new at using a razor for cuts.

Nope, he won't be cutting my hair and he would not want to anyway! I think my hair will just be growing for a bit.

Like you, I very much appreciate the caring, support and friendship I have gotten through Blogland. Especially now that we are all living in some degree of isolation. Contact with others helps a lot! Take care.

  3. I used to cut my husband's hair. How long ago that was! My youngest daughter cut her husband's hair and all four childrens', just because she remembered me doing. it.

    1. She learned from her Mom and I'm sure it helped out a lot financially. As I told Jenny (above) I always cut my two sons' hair when they were young and growing up. I really didn't have a choice as we could not afford hair cuts. But that was a long time ago and a different style of cut. I had never cut an adults hair or used a razor to do it. I see now the razor is not so difficult once you learn what you are doing. I have a feeling I'll be cutting his a lot more in the future and for sure during this isolation. You take care Joanne!

  4. I shave my husbands head for him every night! It is an easy style! Yes we all have feelings of frustration and loss during these times. Good thing we have lots of blog friends:)

    1. Oh Connie, blog friends make a LOT of difference! It is so helpful to share with others and to know we are not alone in this strange new life we now have.

Good for you for taking care of Far Guy's hair as you do! I guess I am in the minority in not having been cutting my husband's hair but that will be changing now!

You two take care and be safe!

  5. I usually get my hair cut every two weeks and it has been three weeks since my last cut. I am OK ... for now. Nice of you to take of the hubby. The one thing I am missing the most is going to the gym. I am working out at home but it isn't quite the same. Take care.

    1. No, working out at home is not the same and for some of us (like me) it is hard to keep up with it on a regular basis at home. We used to take a senior exercise class at the gym twice a week. Besides helping to keep us moving despite arthritis and other age related issues it also gave us an opportunity to make friends in our age and interest group. The gyms around here was one of the first things to close and like you, we have really missed it.

You and your family take care and be safe!

  6. If O.K. asked me to cut his hair, I'd refuse - I always have the valid excuse of my bad eyesight. My hair really wants cutting, too, but for now it will have to wait. I am definitely not going to attempt doing that myself.
So far, there have not been any new challenges for me. Like I mentioned on my blog, I am used to working from home; I still do my usual twice-weekly shopping (not needing much for a single household anyway), I still go for (almost) daily walks, run once or twice a week, read, write, play, watch TV...
Not having to use public transport is a relief, as our trains are so often late or cancelled.
Like probably everyone else, most unnerving about the whole situation is the insecurity and the inability to plan anything: Will we be able (or allowed!) to meet our families for Easter? Can we celebrate O.K.'s father's 80th birthday, and a few days later, O.K.'s birthday? Will we be going away for a week in May, on a hiking holiday? (Our hotel booking has not yet been cancelled.) Are my sister and I going to travel to Yorkshire in June?

    1. Yes, there are so many unanswered questions now. I have a feeling this will be a quiet Easter. Where I live we are under isolation orders until at least April 30th and I won't be surprised to see that extended. This is a difficult time for traveling of any kind since so many borders and businesses are closed. I do hope by May and June you will be able to take your holiday trips.

It is so fortunate you are able to work at home now. I would hate to take public transportation during a time like this. We are just trying to stay in as much as possible due to our age but we do have to get a few groceries once a week. Take care!

  7. My mother cut and washed the entire family's hair. When I was preparing to leave home at 17 I had to have a lesson from my mother on caring for my hair without her. I remember it very clearly. It became a very traumatic scene at the basin! She always went to the hairdressers for her own hair. I will miss my trips to the hairdressers now but am looking forward to seeing my hair grow longer and it is nothing in the grander scale of things in any case. Over the years I have cut various boyfriends hair and always enjoyed it and the results were fine, but that was before razor cutting.

    1. Your Mother always sounds like such a special person! I used to cut my two sons hair all the time when they were little as we could not afford haircuts. I did okay then but it was a different, longer style in those days and I did not use a razor. I usually only go to the hairdressers when I need a haircut and no doubt this will be a longer time away than usual. I'm not worried about it though. It's not like I'm going to get dressed up and go out!

  8. Ha-ha! I chuckled about your account of cutting Tom's hair. Perhaps when The Plague has gone you can open a men's hair salon - Bonnie's Barbershop. I only get my hair cut every two months and I was due for a visit just as the pandemic ramped up. I guess I will just have to be a hippie again. I might have to wear a hairband. Pink would suit me best I think.

    1. No, nothing wrong with long hair on men. I kind of like it as it takes me back to my hippie days. I don't think I'll be opening up a barbershop though as that is really not my thing. Sure you can wear pink - the perfect color for you!

  9. Made me laugh too. Luckily I suspected what might happen and got mine cut a couple of weeks before everything closed. Unfortunately, I didn't have the prescience to sell my pension funds.

    1. That was thinking ahead to get a haircut. I too wish I would have seen enough of the future to so something with my retirement fund. I have been afraid to even look at it since all this started. Back on 9/11 I lost over half of what I had and it took more than ten years to get it back. I may not have ten years this time.

  10. Congrats on cutting Tom's hair! Leah cuts Dagan's, the boys', and mine! She just can't cut her own. But she keeps it really long and ties or pins it all the time and seldom goes in to have it trimmed. It is a skill I don't have--LOL! ;)

    1. That's great that Leah can do that! Not only can it save a lot of money but it makes it more convenient for everyone. I have never been good at cutting or even styling hair but in times like we are in now we do what we can.

  12. You have a new vocation Hair Designer !
I cut my hair since I really do not go out that much before, for now it works for me. Plus between all the drugs I take I don't have that much hair anymore.

  13. Something New on your Resume... Barber! I used to wish that The Man would have his Hair and Beard cut, now I'm rather glad he resisted! *Whew!* I have Dreadlocks so no Bad Hair days... but my Grandchild told me she wanted her long locs cut short... I'm glad the Salons were not available, perhaps she'll change her Mind, I Love her long Hair!

    1. Welcome to my blog! Barber is not something I would choose for my resume but I'm glad to know now that I can help out with things like that when necessary. Teenagers go through so many changes in the styles they want for their hair and at least that is something that will grow back! Good to see you here.

  14. You made me smile with your hair-cutting story, Bonnie!
    :)

It's many, many years since I've been to a hairdresser.

I cut my own hair, and have done so for the past 17 years, give or take.

I had long hair...down to my waist. I always wore in a single plait down my back. One day I decided to trim/even the ends...and just kept cutting until it got to the length it is in my pic on my blog. Since that day I've kept it at that/this length.

You and your husband take good care of yourselves and each other...stay safe. :)

  15. You really are talented Lee if you cut your own hair. I can cut bangs but not the back of my hair. I had long hair most of my life too but it seems like as I got older my hair got shorter. Take care Lee.

  16. Hubby shaves his own head so that's easy and I either cut mine or he will snip the back for me. Haven't been out for a cut in decades.

No complaints from my end of the world. Working from home is my Happy Place so I'm good there. Hubby still goes in five days a week and we're taking cautions when he gets home to get the clothes quickly washed up and him into the shower.

The newest thing for me is, yesterday for the first time, I made orange-scented bleach wipes. So much fun. Smells good and cleans well.

We can't go to the bookstore but thankfully, we have a lovely back area with a magic floaty table for us to write/read on. And soon, the new garden will be up and running after I order materials to make my first ever, raised beds.

That's all from here. Cheers, Ivy

    1. Hi Ivy, welcome to my blog! I'm still fairly new at blogging so I'm learning as I go. However, I have been following blogs for over five years and I love all the wonderful people I've met through blogs. Good for you that you can cut your own hair - that's great! Orange-scented bleach wipes sound wonderful. I'll have to check out your blog. Thanks for stopping by!
