It's Been a Long Time

Hello!  Most of you will remember that I took time off from blogging to better adjust to some life changes.  Tom had been having many health problems and we were not doing well with the necessary adjustments in our life.  I had hoped I would be able to get more accomplished in regard to these changes if I took a couple of months off from blogging.  Unfortunately, things don’t always work out like you plan.

A lot has been happening in these last few months.  Tom’s balance problems continued and he started to have falls on a regular basis.  Last month he had a bad fall hitting his head.   He was really banged up and of course head wounds tend to bleed a lot.  My son and I took him to the emergency room and he was admitted to the hospital.  He had a CT scan, MRI, and x-rays.  Thankfully the tests were all clear.  Still, he was kept in the hospital for four days at the end of which they admitted him to a rehab facility for ten days of occupational and physical therapy.  He came home a couple of weeks ago and now has weekly visits from a home health nurse, occupational therapist, and physical therapist.  His balance is still bad so at the doctor’s suggestion we purchased a walker for him.  Not something he wanted but those falls are just too dangerous.  So now we are essentially starting over with his physical condition but we are staying positive about it all.

I celebrated my 70th birthday in August and since then my health has continued to throw me hoops to jump through.  I had my annual mammogram and a nodule was found that was concerning.  They now have me coming in every six months for a scan in order to check for changes. Then I had a fall that sent me to the emergency room with possible broken ribs. I lucked out and they were just bruised.  (I’m clumsy at times!)  Before that was completely healed, I began having gallbladder problems eventually leading to surgery.  I discovered having your gallbladder removed can bring challenges in your diet but I’m working on adjusting.  I was just healing up from that when I got hit with a bad case of RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus).  It has been going around here quite badly with the hospitals full.  My body still was not ready to give me a break because I then had to have a questionable growth removed from my face and sent in for a biopsy.  I was fortunate and it was benign!  I’m really not telling you all this to complain but more to fill you in on what has been going on in the last few months.  I so wanted to get back to blogging much sooner but things have just been crazy around here!

The past few months have taught me a lot about myself and how I handle challenges.  I’ve always been good at managing whatever life throws at me but I’ve discovered the older you get the more difficult some situations can become.  I’ve also learned that sometimes (actually much of the time) I just can’t get everything accomplished that I would like and that’s okay.  More importantly, I am learning to bend with the wind and try not to let it break me.

Thank you if you’ve stayed with me this long.  I sure have missed everyone and look forward to catching up with you all.

Sophie

Zeus

These two sweet cats have definitely brought a lot of joy and love to us over the past months!

  1. Well, I'm so glad to see you back, Bonnie! I've been wondering how you both were doing. You've had a lot to cope with, and yes, as you get older it's harder to manage everything. It sounds as if you've come to grips with what you can do, and what you can let go. Read blogs just when you feel like it, stop when you feel like it! Really happy to see you, though I wish the news were better.

    1. Boud it is wonderful to see you again too! I know you understand much of what I've been dealing with and I have always been able to get wonderful bits of advice from reading your blog. I hope you are well and enjoying all of your hobbies and crafts!

  2. I have been thinking about you and also missed your presence on the many blogs we both enjoy. I am sorry to hear about the numerous health emergencies you and your husband have experienced. This is hard. Hopefully, as Spring arrives and the weather improves, you and your husband will feel better. Fingers crossed. Take care Bonnie!

  3. I'm happy to see you back and to have a catch up on your news. It's not the best, but could be worse, as is said. I hope, in spite of your added responsibilities, you are able to check in on us and catch up with our lives. So glad you still have the kitties.

    1. Joanne, thank you for stopping by! I do have a lot to catch up on but eventually I will. I saw that you have a beautiful new feline friend! Cats are the best company and they do bring much joy and love. It sounds like your cat is working hard to make sure you know who rules the roost! Cats do love to train their humans! She is a beautiful girl and I was so happy when I heard you adopted her!

  4. Bonnie, I sure am sorry to read about you and Tom's health challenges, most of it sounded pretty scary. I hope you share more about your gallbladder in the near future, as I came close to getting mine removed just a couple months ago. At the same time, you're one of the nicest people I've met online and I thought of you often these last few months. I'm very glad to see you on here again and I hope you share more soon. 🙂

    1. Doug I am so happy to be back and see you and everyone else. I have missed sharing conversations with you on both of our blogs. I'm happy to share anything about my gallbladder surgery if you are interested. I'm sorry to hear you've had gallbladder trouble - it is no fun! Feel free to email me (bonnied942@gmail.com) if you have any particular questions about it. I had robotic surgery if you can believe that! I did okay with the surgery but the first couple of months after it were a bit difficult as it takes a while for your body to adjust to not having a gallbladder. You need to cut as much fat as possible from your diet at first and I had to experiment with what I could or could not eat. I lost 30 lbs. but that's a plus as far as I'm concerned!

Thank you for coming by! I look forward to hearing more about what's been going on in your life!

  5. Oh my, Bonnie, you've had a lot to deal with in a relatively short time. Let's hope things calm down now while you get used to all the challenges dropped into your life. That's a lot of stress, so please be kind to yourself and give yourself room and time to rest and recover. Especially, watch how often you say "I should ..." and try to say instead "When I feel more able, I will ...". It's amazing what we say to ourselves that we wouldn't say to anyone else. I'm glad you're trying to bend so you don't break. Hugs, my friend. My best to you and your husband.

Yes, I am always harder on myself than anyone else. Things have not been easy but I am always thankful for the blessings in my life. I hope you and your kitties are well and happy. Thank you for being my friend!

  6. Hi Bonnie, lovely to see your blog post pop up last night. Zeus and Sophie look extremely well and bushy. I am glad they have been with you all the way. 70 is that turning point in age when things start to go wrong, I would never have believed it but it really does seem to happen. You have been in my thoughts a lot and I am always pleased to see you visiting my instagram and I know you are still around. I hope you and Tom are now feeling able to cope and things will get better. Also often think of your brother and hope he is doing alright. xxx

    1. It is so good to hear from you again Rachel. You know, I tried to approach my 70th with an upbeat attitude but I guess my health had something else in mind. I try to take it all as a learning experience and fight to improve what I can and learn to accept the rest. You have been in my thoughts too and I hoped you would see my visits to your instagram account and know I had not forgotten you. Besides, I really enjoy your art work! Thank you for thinking of my brother. He is doing well in his 80s and still traveling and photographing Costa Rica. Tom and I are still working on a big learning curve but we'll get there. I hope you and your brothers have been well. xxx

  7. OMGosh! You have both been through the mill! So glad to see you back! I know how hard it is to get things done with all the health issues popping up...and how much harder it is to adjust to everything going haywire the older we get.

Love seeing Sophie and Zeus. They really do bring a lot of joy in trying situations, don't they? I hope things settle down now for both of you. *love and hugs from Fargo*

  9. As the number which represents our age gets higher, we do have to adjust, it's pleasing that Tom is getting the help he needs. We are all learning to pace ourselves, do less, make the job last 2 tries, as you say bend don't break. I hope you are back to full fitness soon.

Just to let you know that I don't blog much now as I concentrate on my YouTube Channel 'My Journey to become a Professional Artist' which keeps me accountable to creating. x

  16. Dear Bonnie, it's me, Meike (Librarian) - Blogger won't allow me to comment other than Anonymous.
Let me join in the "Welcome back!" chorus! It is good to see you back here, and your lovely cats, too.
Things seem to happen in clusters, don't they. It certainly has been the case for you, but you seem to take it all in your stride; the "learning to bend with the wind so that it does not break you" is a valuable lesson, one I have had to learn, too.

  17. Hi Bonnie...Mary here, like Meike, blogger evidently doesn't care for me either. :) You've been in my thoughts and as I suspected, health related issues reared their ugly heads for you and Tom these past months. I'm sorry it has been such a rough time for both of you. As my Brit mother used to say when I was low, Keep your Pecker up (aka nose--as in heads up). I passed the 70 mark several years ago (...blew out my knee last year--so had to have ACL replacement surgery so am acquainted with the charm of aging :). Our bodies sure like to remind us of the passage of time (and strength, and energy, etc., etc.). Hope you are able to find new ways of coping and a bit more time for yourself just to enjoy life. Take care. xx

  18. Hi Mary, it is so good to hear from you. Thank you for thinking of me. You are so kind. I'm sorry to hear about your knee surgery. Things like that can be slow to heal. I hope it is better now. You are so right about the charm of aging! I usually adjust to challenges fairly well but the past few months have thrown me a bit. Thank you for your kindness and friendship. xx

  21. Dear Bonnie, this is Arleen, from Starting Over, Accepting Changes. I was just reading some blogs from old friends I met on Blogger and on most, I could not write a comment, but I could possibly on yours.

I am so sorry to read of all your’s and your husbands’s health difficulties. Life can hit us hard in our latter years and it can come on too quickly. Falling is one of my greatest fears and, unfortunately, I have had some experience in having that happen. Hang in there; we never know our strength until we are tested. This testing, though, is the pits. I wish you better days.

    1. Arleen, how wonderful it is to hear from you! I'm sorry to hear you have had some falling problems. It is frightening, especially as we grow older. Tom did not want a walker at first but he is getting used to it and has not had a single fall since getting it. Thank you for reminding me that we don't know our strength until we are tested. It's been hard since we were both having problems at the same time but I am determined to manage things for Tom and myself and come out on top. I appreciate your comment! (blogger has been causing problems for everyone lately!)
