If Life Gives You Lemons

We are still working on adjusting to the many changes we’ve had in our lives recently. Everyone goes through the usual ups and downs in life and we learned long ago that you have to deal with what life gives you.

It’s been a bit more difficult to get used to the physical changes Tom has faced because they seem more permanent. A year ago, neither one of us would have believed he would be using a walker now. He’s getting used to it and even admits it does help him. Besides, if life gives you lemons you make lemonade, right? Or maybe in our case, if life gives you a walker you turn it into a “cat transport vehicle”!

    1. He likes to take part in everything! When Tom first got the walker it drove the cat crazy because he wanted to use it but couldn't. The minute we put the tray on it he took ownership of it!

  11. That is a great way to handle the situation! I admire the two of you for it, and just wish my Dad would have had some of Tom's spirit. He (my Dad) just let himself go and would not even TRY to use a walker - he was determined that it would not be helpful and he would not be seen using one, no matter how good (and kind) or arguments were.
Our old cat's favourite place was the ironing board - it gave him just the right height to watch over our dining table and follow the conversation :-D

    1. Hi Meike, Tom was against a walker at first and our doctor convinced him it was better than having the repeated falls he had been having and ending up in the hospital again. I am sorry about your Dad. I was so sad when I read your post about his passing. I had not seen it until recently.

I can just see your cat perched on an ironing board watching the family dinner and activities! They do like to be involved don't they?

    1. Absolutely! Zeus actually ecourages Tom to use the walker so it's a win - win!

  13. After Roger's fall Feb 3, he uses his walker all the time..that was the lemonade that came with that fall. I have been trying to get him to use it for ages.

    1. I'm sorry you and Roger have been through so much recently! It is good to hear that he is using a walker now. Tom didn't want to either but I think our doctor scared him into it. It helped a lot when I got a tray to go on it so he can carry things (sometimes things other than cats). Do you know that the fall that sent Tom to the hospital was Feb 4th, the day after Roger's fall. Things have really been upside down for us since then and it sounds similar for you. Please take care of yourself and try to relax when you can. Hugs!

    2. I just now came back and saw this. I can't believe Tom's fall was the day after Roger's. After his hard fall here at my daughter's he seems to have settled down. And where he scraped the skin off his arm the first fall finally healed enough till I don't have to keep it covered. It sure took long enough, but that was partly because he decided to scrub it once when it was really starting to heal...I think that one set it back weeks, and he picked at it again later on.

I wish he could handle a tray on a walker, but he is far down he cannot do it. He does well to navigate to the bathroom or in here. Has not been out of the house since we moved here...since Feb 3 he has been outside only 3 times.

    3. Oh Rose, I'm sorry to hear Roger is having so many problems. It gets hard keeping a close watch on him doesn't it? It all sounds so similar to Tom's situation. Tom is on blood thinners so even a small bump turns into a bleeding problem. I'm so glad Roger is using a walker now at least. It took a lot to get Tom to use one but I know it can be a hard thing to accept. Take care of yourself Rose!

  14. Oh Bonnie, I am just getting around to reading your last post. Hard to believe you have been through so much! My goodness! I'm glad things have calmed down enough to give you a bit of a break. It is so good to hear from you, and thank you for visiting my blog. So glad Tom is using his walker. Falls are dangerous, and scary...I know from experience. I still cringe and grab onto a tree when Ellie comes running toward me. :) Hope things stay good for you. Those cats of yours are just beautiful. I'm sure they brighten your and Tom's day. Life sure can get crazy at times. Love, Henny

    1. I'm so happy to hear from you! I think we all go through those periods of difficulty especially as we get older. I have missed all my blog friends but it seems like I never have free time anymore. I remember you having some run ins with Ellie! She means well but gets excited I imagine, but we do have to be careful to avoid falls. I hope you two are well and able to enjoy Spring. It's still cold here but I'm looking forward to Spring. Take care Henny!

  15. Yes! Be the best lemonade maker, ever. My mom (she passed), used to say that all the time to me, that I was a very good lemonade maker. This is the way!

That said, adjusting takes time and I get that too. Here's to healing up and having fun. Cheers, Ivy.
