Hello

I may not be blogging much lately but I’m still here and still reading all your blog posts.  My friends here are very important to me and I am grateful for your friendships.

June is always a busy month for us.  My daughter-in-law Kristi's birthday is June 4th, Tom’s birthday is June 23rd (yes tomorrow!) and of course we celebrated Father’s Day this past Sunday.  In between all that Tom and I both have had several medical and dental appointments and we have had people we hired to come out and do some work around our house.  It’s been kind of crazy around here!

We hire someone to come out and clean our gutters around the roof of the house twice a year.  There are many trees in our neighborhood and the gutters seem to fill up quickly.  Tom used to do that job but it is much too dangerous for him now with his balance problems.  Last year we found a very nice man that is a teacher at the high school here.  He has a gutter cleaning business on the side for additional income and he has been a blessing to us.

This month we also had tree trimmers come out to trim the trees in both our front and back yard.  We have a row of Osage Orange trees at the back of our yard and they grow quickly plus the winters here can be damaging to their branches.  About every five years or so we have them trimmed to prevent potential problems.  Some people say we should have them cut down but I love having trees around the house.

I was trying to capture the sunset and you can see some of the trees I'm talking about here.  In the summer they fill in and provide a lot of shade.

Some of you may recall in my last post I was concerned about some medical tests I was going to have done.  I had both an upper & lower GI test and they were not as bad as I thought they would be since I was sedated for both of them.  They did do a biopsy from each test and it took two full weeks before I got the results.  Fortunately, both of the biopsies were benign however the one from the colonoscopy was a precancerous adenoma.  I was told I have a high risk for colon cancer so I will have to repeat that test every five years instead of every ten.  I am, of course, thrilled both tests were benign and I feel quite fortunate I did not put them off any longer.  A colonoscopy is one of those tests we never want to have done mainly because the prep the day before is not a fun thing.  However, I have learned the importance of having that test done because it truly can prevent cancer.

We are hoping for things to slow down a bit for us in July and maybe I'll even come up with a more interesting post than this one!  Take care everyone!

Cat pictures just for fun:

  1. Hi Bonnie, happy Birthday to Tom today! I hope your daughter in law had a nice birthday too. I am so thankful you had your medical tests when you did. That is a beautiful sunset photo and I do love your trees. Not only do they provide shade but I bet the birds love them, also. Such a blessing for you to find someone to clean your gutters. Hope you both enjoy this special day. 🦋

  2. Do you get these tests on a regular precautionary 10-year basis there? I ask because precautionary colonoscopy is not something our nhs offers. I used to get them 5-yearly because of a prevalent family history, but was then told about 10 years ago that without symptoms I don't need to go again. I've asked but the answer is no.

    1. In this country they used to say every ten years after you turn 50. Recently they have been suggesting the tests start at an earlier age because more younger people are getting colon cancer. If you have the test and they find a pre-cancerous polyp (there are different kinds and not all are pre-cancer) then you should get the test more often. In my case right now it is in five years but I was told sometimes it is needed sooner. I have heard that after 75 or 80 you don't need to have the test any longer but that may depend on individual situations.

We don't have anything like the NHS here and have to depend on insurance and/or Medicare. Usually these tests are paid in full by the insurance company though because they are preventive.

You don't always have symptoms for something like this but if you ever do at all then I would contact you doctor especially since you have a family history.

  3. Good to hear the medical tests went well and that you now know enough to have the one repeated on a regular basis.

Having reno work done on my house this month (one bathroom finished, another starting today) so I know what you mean about having people in and out. Luckily, all the fellows have been incredibly pleasant and do great work so it has been noisy (i.e. cut out a cast iron tub), but all in all, a good experience. So, onward.

Hope that Tom has a very Happy Birthday and that you are both able to enjoy some pleasant summer days.

    1. Thanks Mary! I feel for you having reno work in the house as that is much more disrupting than having work done outside. We need to get our kitchen redone but I keep putting it off because I know it will be a mess in the middle of our house. It is great once it's all done though. I bet both of your bathrooms will be wonderful for you!

  4. Hi Bonnie, it's nice to see a new blog post! These are some nice pictures, I like that one of your osaage orange trees, good for you for not chopping them down. I'm glad to read of your good news from your medical tests too, to be honest I keep putting off having a colonoscopy done simply because I live alone, not sure how I'd get there and back. Anyway, lots of good news here! :^)

    1. It is a relief to get past those tests! Whenever you decide to have a colonoscopy maybe you could get a cab there and home or even ask the hospital about drivers for things like that. They won't let you drive after the test because you can be a little loopy!

I love most any kind of trees and would hate to live without them even though the tree trimming can get expensive. The trees we have also provide homes for many squirrels and birds and I really enjoy them. Thanks for stopping by Doug!

  6. Hello Bonnie, how good to know your tests were not quite as bad as you feared, and even better to know the results!
Were you given additional advice, for instance what to consider when you buy and prepare food, to lower the risk further?
You are right in wanting to keep the trees, they are not only beautiful but also important for the micro climate around your house. Trees can make a big difference that way.
    Lovely cat pictures!

    1. Thank you Meike! The doctor told me to eat a lot of vegetables, fruit and high fiber foods. I also got some printed information on diet and it said to limit the amount of red meat and processed meats that you eat. My diet has mostly been like that anyway and I'm not a big meat eater but I will try and increase the veggies and fiber.

I love any trees Meike and you are so right about the micro climate. Plus we have so many squirrels and birds that I enjoy. I hope your eye is doing better!

  8. I was told that no colonoscopy tests are required after the age of 75 so I only have 1 more to go. They are an awful prep but I am glad your results came out well.

    1. I have heard that before and I've also heard after 80. If it's 75 then I might just have one more as well since I'll be 74 when I get my next one. There may be a difference if you have shown pre-cancerous results though. I sure agree with you about the prep - it is awful! Thanks for stopping by Ellen!

  9. That's good news about your medical results. Very glad you went. I'm long past the age of routine colonoscopy, unless something happens. Not sorry! The test itself is not much, but the prep. is miserable.

Happy birthday to everyone in your family it applies to.

    1. Yep, I think we all agree about that prep! I'm glad you don't have to have the test any longer. I'm not sure how long I will have to continue with it yet.

      Thanks for the birthday wishes!

  11. Hi, Bonnie! Yes, colonoscopies are important and the prep makes for a very unhappy day, but better to know than have the sudden shock that it's too late. I love the way kitties sometimes shield their eyes when sleeping. Yours are sweet.

    Love,

    1. That has to be the most put off medical test ever! I put mine off for several years too and now I'm glad I had it because otherwise it would have turned into cancer according to my doctor.

  13. I am glad you got good results from your tests. So far I haven't needed a colonoscopy as my FITT tests have shown no blood. Hopefully that continues, though the oncologist I saw mentioned that those pesky cancer cells can travel quickly from the cervix to the colon. My exam from him was good however.

    God bless.

    1. I'm glad your exam was good and your FITT tests have been good as well. I think the important thing is that you are keeping up with your doctor and following his suggestions.

  15. I admire your bravery in getting those medical tests done Bonnie. Glad to hear that you passed with flying colours. By the way, teaching and gutter cleaning are not usually vocations that you would link together! Perhaps I should have had a grave-digging job on the side when I was a teacher...or an assassin...or a rat catcher.

    1. I am certainly glad to have those tests in the past and to know the precancerous adenoma was removed.

I have great admiration for the gentleman that cleans our gutters. He is not opposed to additional honest work to assist in supporting his family. Who knows, you may have enjoyed a grave digging job in the summer during your teaching years.

  16. I'm so happy to hear you had the tests done and prevented future problems, Bonnie. I admire your courage; as you know I am also very anxious about the upper GI exam as I have heard some scary stories and therefore every positive story about it helps to balance the picture for me.

Belated birthday wishes for your husband! And I love your trees . . . and your sweet kitties.

    1. I certainly understand your feelings about the upper GI. I was scared to have it even knowing I would be sedated. If they were not going to sedate me then I seriously doubt if I would have agreed to it! I am hoping they will change the way the test is done where you live and they will make it easier by completely sedating the patients!

Thanks for your birthday wishes for Tom. We just celebrated with our kids tonight. I send you all my best and I'll be sending you an email in the next week. Take care Jenny!

  17. You are having a busy month. I'm so glad you had the colonoscopy done. Colon cancer runs in my family. My younger brother died at the young age of 49 with colon cancer. I've had precancerous polyps and have had a colonoscopy every three years. It's scary. Your kitties are so cute! I love trees around the house too. :)

    1. I am sorry to hear your brother died so young. It is a frightening thing to have cancer run in your family. It sounds like you had the same thing I had with the precancerous polyps. I am sorry to hear that. They told me I would have to repeat the test in five years but depending on how that one went I might have to go to every three years like you. You know it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for that darned prep!

Our kitties are very spoiled but they sure are a bright spot in our lives! Take care Henny and thanks for stopping by!
